What to know

What the vaccine helps prevent

Shingles is caused when the virus that causes chickenpox becomes active again. Vaccination reduces the risk of shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain that can continue after the rash.

Who should ask

Canadian guidance recommends recombinant zoster vaccine for adults age 50 and older and for adults age 18 and older who are or will be immunocompromised. People who have had shingles or an older zoster vaccine should also ask about current guidance.

Timing and coverage

The recombinant shingles vaccine is given as a two-dose series. Timing may need to account for immune-suppressing treatment, recent shingles and prior vaccination. Public funding and private insurance coverage vary.
